Through a unique collaboration, this inaugural workshop brought together students from three different universities in New York, resulting in insightful and inspiring contributions. After introducing tools designed to enhance understanding of global escalations across various fields, participants offered valuable perspectives. Two key themes emerged:
- Neglecting historical context can jeopardize the sustainability of peace negotiations. Even during the de-escalation phase, it is essential to acknowledge past grievances without becoming mired in them. Implementing external mechanisms, such as truth and reconciliation commissions, is vital for addressing these issues.
- International pressure plays a crucial role in compelling parties to come to the negotiation table and work towards de-escalation.
"This workshop was a priceless opportunity to connect with engaged, passionate academics and peers that I never would have otherwise had the chance to learn from."
"The workshop provided very valuable perspective into the world of negotiation from an expert in the field and should be conducted much more frequently."
